Tribute Mondays: Hampton Hawes

Hampton Barnett Hawes, Jr. (November 13, 1928 – May 22, 1977)

Jazz Pianist, Hampton Hawes, was self taught at an early age and began his professional run in his late teens. He had an up and down career that included a stint in prison (he was pardoned by President Kennedy during a 10 year sentence) an an heroin addiction. He released a successful award winning book (his autobiography, Raise up off me, in 1974). He died of a brain hemorrhage in 1977 at aged 48 years old. Milton Nascimento

Milton Nascimento (born October 26, 1942)

Brazilian Singer, Songwriter and Guitarist, Milton Nascimento, began his tenure in the Samba Groups, Evolussamba and Sambacana and then went on to be a member of the Clube da Equina (Street Corner Club) Movement. He released some Albums beginning in 1969 and gained international recognition when he worked with Wayne Shorter on his 1974 Album. Jazz Greats: Doc West

Harold "Doc" West (August 12, 1915, Wolford, North Dakota – May 4, 1951, Cleveland , Ohio)



Jazz Drummer, Doc West, played Piano and Cello as a child, but switched to Drums and began his professional run in the 1930's. He played in numerous Bands, sometimes filling in as a leader for Chick Webb's ensemble and was a sideman on the stage for Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Tiny Grimes and others. Eldee Young

Eldee Young (January 7, 1936 – February 12, 2007)

Jazz Double Bass and Cello Player, Eldee Young, was most active in the Rhythm and Blues genre and the Cool Jazz and Post Bop sub genres. He began to play at aged 13 and became a professional Musician by aged 19. He was a member of Young-Holt-Unlimited from 1968 to 1974. He died in 2007 from an heart attack. Reggae and Dancehall Musician, Wayne Smith, was regarded as the Artist, whose 1985 hit Single ushered in digital era of Reggae music. He began is run at around 13 years old on Sound Systems and then branched off into Recording. He moved to New York in 1989 and established his own Record label (Sleng Teng Records), worked with numerous Producers and after many years he returned to live in Mandeville, Jamaica in 2013. He died in 2014 at aged 48 years, after going to the hospital with severe stomach pains.
