Tribute Mondays: Joe Sample

Joseph Leslie Sample (Feb. 1, 1939 – Sept.12, 2014)

Pianist, Keyboard Player and Composer, Joe Sample, was a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders. He had a great solo career and did session work for many (Miles Davis, George Benson, Eric Clapton, The Supremes and others). He began to play Piano at aged 5 years old and contributed greatly to the music industry through the years; he died in 2014. Gerald Stanley Wilson (Sept. 4, 1918 – Sept. 8, 2014)

Jazz Trumpeter, Big Bandleader, Composer, Arranger and Educator, Gerald Wilson, wrote arrangements for many (Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald and others). He led Big Bands during the mid-1940's and also formed a critically acclaimed Band in 1960. He released many regarded Albums, hosted a Radio show during the 1970's and taught at California State University, CAL Arts and the University of California. William Emanuel Huddleston; October 9, 1920 – December 23, 2013)


Jazz Multi-instrumentalist (Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Piano, Shehnai, Shafar, Arghul and Koto), Composer and Author, Yusef Lateef, is regarded for his blending of Jazz and Eastern Music. He was the owner of Yol Records and Fana Music (a music publishing company). He released regarded works and was also a Session Musician for others. Dalton Sinclair Bishop (Born 1938 Chapman Lane,
Bridgetown , Barbados - Died 1970 Barbados)


Ska, R&B, Soul, Gospel and Calypso Singer, Jackie Opel, invented Spouge Music (a fusion of Ska, Calypso and R&B music). He released many singles during the 1960's after being discovered by Byron Lee (of the Dragonaires), but his career was cut short when he died in a car crash in 1970 at aged 32 years old.
