Jazz Greats: Don Byas

Carlos Wesley " Don" Byas (October 21, 1912 – August 24, 1972)

Jazz Tenor Saxophonist, Don Byas, was a Bandleader and Sideman that worked mostly in Bebop and played with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, and many others. He led his own Band at aged 20 years old and went on to score hits both as a Solo and featured Musician. Weldon Irvine

Weldon Jonathan Irvine Jr. (October 27, 1943 – April 9, 2002)

Composer, Playwright, Poet, Pianist, Organist and Keyboardist, Weldon Irvine (also known as Master Wel), worked in many Genres (Funk-Jazz, Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, Rhythm and Blues and Gospel) and wrote over 500 songs during his tenure. He mentored Rappers Q-Tjp and Mos Def and was the Bandleader for Nina Simone, writing "To be young gifted and black." Everton Dennis Williams (born  Nov 21, 1954 in Clarendon, Jamaica)

Reggae Singer, Songwriter and Producer, Everton Blender, began his career in the 1970's using the name Babbaru. He worked on Sound Systems and released unsuccessful singles into the mid 1980's. After a break and working as a house Painter, he returned to the music industry with help from Garnett Silk and went on to score numerous hits. Prairie View Co-eds

Prairie View Co-eds

All Female Band, Prairie View Co-eds, were formed in the 1940's. The band was made up of students of the Prairie View A&M University whom took the place of the Male affiliated band when the members were drafted into the army. RBL Posse

California Gangsta Group, RBL Posse, consisted of Black C, Mr. Cee and Hitman . Their first Hit that was released in 1992 was a self produced effort. Group member Mr. Cee was killed in 1996 and Hitman was then killed in 2003, which prompted the end of the outfit. Tribute Mondays: Sir Lancelot

Lancelot Victor Edward Pinard (March 24, 1902 – March 12, 2001)

Calypso Singer and Actor, Sir Lancelot, helped to popularize Calypso in North America and was a major influence on Harry Belafonte. He studied to become a Pharmacist and went to New York City to study Medicine, but switched to studying Music and Singing. He appeared in more than 15 films during the 1940's and 1950's and also recorded many songs, wrote a Film Score and sang commercials.
