Tribute Mondays: Perry Bradford

Perry Bradford (Feb. 14, 1893, Montgomery, Alabama, US – Apr. 20, 1970, New York City, US)

Composer, Songwriter, Dancer and Vaudeville performer, Perry Bradford, began his career in 1906 in Minstrel shows and moved on to solo Pianist work in 1909. He is regarded for bringing African American musical characteristics to recorded music. He worked with Alberta Hunter and Mamie Smith, enabling the latter's first recording session in 1920, which was the first time that a African American Blues Singer appeared on record. His career was derailed by the Great Depression, but his legacy has since gained some recognition. He died in 1970; thanks for your contribution Mr. Bradford, you are appreciated. Jazz Clarinetist, Tenor Saxophonist and Bandleader, Bingie Madison, started out in 1921 and continued into the 1930's as a sideman. He led the Mills Blue Rhythm Band in 1930 and was featured in numerous Bands (as well as leading a few) into the 1960's. She left music to attend school and returned to recording after a while in the 1980's. She died in 2009 in Gambia of poisoning.
