Jazz Greats: Elmo Hope

St. Elmo Sylvester Hope (June 27, 1923 – May 19, 1967)

Jazz Pianist, Composer and Arranger, Elmo Hope, was active mostly in the Bebop and Hard Bop sub genres. He was shot by police as a teenager and narrowly survived. His later works both as a Bandleader and Sideman (Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson and others) were previously frowned on, but has now been touted as superb efforts. He died of pneumonia in 1967, after having drug addict related illnesses. Please take a listen here and have a nice Saturday: I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with you, Falling in Love with Love and Barfly (Elmo Hope Trio)
