Jazz Greats: Charlie Shavers

Charles James Shavers (August 3, 1920 – July 8, 1971)

Swing and Jazz Trumpeter, Charlie Shavers, was a respected Arranger and Composer who played with many Jazz Greats (Dizzy Gillespie, Natty King Cole, Roy Eldridge, Sidney Bechet, Billie Holiday and others) from the 1930's onwards. At the age of 16 he back dated his Birthday to 1917 to avoid child labor laws while he performed. He led his own Band and also composed a Jazz standard (Undecided). He died in 1971; please take a listen here and have a good Saturday: Hambone (with Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra), The Trumpet Battle (with Roy Eldridge) and Undecided
