Jazz Greats: Porter Kilbert

Porter Kilbert (June 10, 1921 – October 23, 1960)

Jazz Alto and Tenor Saxophonist, Porter Kilbert, worked in numerous Bands (Coleman Hawkins Band, Red Saunders Band, Roy Eldridge Band and many others) and recorded with Fats Navarro, Milt Jackson, Max Roach and others from 1942 to 1952. He formed his own Band in 1952 and was a part of the "Battle of the Saxes"  both in 1955 and 1956 with Tom Archia at the C&C Lounge. Jazz Tenor Saxophonist, Harold Ashby, worked with Duke Ellington's Band and also did session work on Willie Dixon's debut Album (Willie's Blues). He was a freelance musician for many years from 1975 onwards and also recorded with his own Bands. Renn Woods (born Ren Woods; January 1, 1958)

Vocalist, Songwriter, Film, Television and Stage Actress, Renn Woods, is most remembered for playing the roles of Fanta in the film, Roots, and Aquarius in Hair. She began her career at 10 years old in the Trio, Sunday's Child (formerly Three Little Souls). This Trio toured Internationally for many years and appeared on television with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. He scored many hits with his cover versions of Pop hits and still remains active. He is the older brother of Beenie Man.
