Tribute Mondays: Willie Dixon

William James Dixon (Jul. 1, 1915 – Jan. 29, 1992)

Blues Musician (Upright Bass and Guitar), Vocalist, Songwriter, Talent Scout, Arranger and Record Producer, Willie Dixon, is most renowned for his songwriting and contribution to the post World War ll Chicago Blues sound. He was a main figure (Session Musician, Talent Scout, Producer and Songwriter) at Chess  Records from 1950 to 1965, working with Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Little Walter. He began as a Boxer in the 1930's and was imprisoned for 10 months for his refusal to fight in World War ll. After stints in various Groups he moved on to a successful songwriting and solo career beginning in the 1950's. Thanks for your contribution Mr. Dixon. You are appreciated. Jazz Bassist, Jimmy Woode, was a sideman and session musician to many (Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and others) and released a solo effort in 1958. Todd Duncan

Robert Todd Duncan (Feb. 12, 1903 – Feb. 28, 1998)

Baritone Opera Singer and Actor, Todd Duncan, was renown for his portrayal of Porgy (he played the role 1800 times) in the 1935 production of Porgy and Bess.  He had a Bachelors in Music (Butler University) and a Masters Degree (Columbia University Teachers College). He taught voice for over fifty years at Howard University and acted in regarded Plays. He also recorded the first version of "Unchained Melody." He was kicked out of High School because of his lyrical content. He also helped to increase the popularity of Shocking Vibes Production. He now owns a Publishing Company and records occasionally.
