Jazz Greats: Denzil Best

Denzil DaCosta Best (April 27, 1917 – May 24, 1965)

Jazz Percussionist and Composer, Denzil Best, was prominent in Bebop from the 1950's to the early 1960's and was regarded for his style of play and his Brush technique. He was also trained in Piano, Trumpet and Bass, but was most active in his drumming. He appeared on works by many Greats (Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Billie Holiday and others) and composed well known Bebop songs. A 1953 car accident fractured both his legs and he took a year off. After his return he played a few years, but suffered from paralysis in the early 1960's and died in 1965, after falling down a staircase in a Subway station. Please take a listen here and have an excellent Saturday: Move and Wee
