Jazz Greats: John Spikes

John Curry Spikes (July 22, 1881 – June 28, 1955)


Jazz Musician and Entrepreneur, John Spikes, co-led a Band in 1900 that had Jelly Roll Morton as a member. He worked with his brother Reb Spikes to write lyrics for Jazz songs, even crafting the Jazz standard "Someday Sweetheart". The two also ran a Music shop, Night Club, an Agency and a Publishing House in 1919. He Co-Produced the first all-Black Jazz Band in 1922 and Co-Directed a Short Sound Film in 1927.
