Tribute Mondays: Reverend Charles Albert Tindley

Rev. Dr. Charles Albert Tindley (July 7, 1851 – July 26, 1933)

Methodist Minister and Gospel Music Composer, Reverend Charles Albert Tindley, was Self Educated; he learned Hebrew and Greek during a Correspondence Course and eventually a Doctorate.  He Composed many Gospel Hymns and is also one of the Founding Fathers of American Gospel Music. Irene Reid

Irene Reid (September 23, 1930 – January 4, 2008)

Jazz Singer, Irene Reid, began her career in 1947, when she won a amateur contest at the Apollo Theater and held the title for 5 straight weeks. She performed regularly during a 2 year stint at the Savoy Ballroom, worked with Count Basie, performed in a Broadway Musical and released Albums starting in 1963. Gospel Hymn Writers: Louise Shropshire

Louise Shropshire (February 15, 1913 – November 26, 1993)

Louise Shropshire was a Composer of Hyms and a Choir Director that worked regularly with Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey. She also worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King in the Civil Rights Movement. She died penniless in 1993, due to the  exhausting of her financial resources to help others. There are a few videos that really represents her work  on YouTube. Fisk Jubilee Singers

Fisk Jubilee Singers

African American a Cappella Ensemble, Fisk Jubilee Singers, began in 1871 as a source for raising funds for Fisk University. They toured the US and Europe during the 1870's and raised $60,000 in  America and $150,000 in Europe for the Fisk University which was almost bankrupt.
