Tribute Mondays: Melba Liston

Melba Doretta Liston (Jan. 13, 1926 – Apr. 23, 1999)

Self Taught Jazz Trombonist, Musical Arranger and Composer, Melba Liston, was the first woman trombonist to play in Big Bands during the 1940's and 1960's. She also composed and arranged for numerous Artist (Randy Weston, Clark Terry, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson and others) and had stints on Motown recordings and at Stax Records. She taught for 3 years in America and 6 years in Jamaica at the Jamaica School of music (from 1973 - 1979). And worked on Reggae Compositions on the Jamaican film Smile Orange.
