Tribute Mondays: Clarence Holiday

Clarence Halliday ( Baltimore , July 23, 1898 – Dallas , March 1, 1937)

Banjo Player and Rhythm Guitarist, Clarence Holiday played in Eubie Blakes Band at an young age. And went on to work with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Benny Carter, Louis Metcalf, Don Redman and others. He was the father of Billie Holiday, whom he fathered at age 16 years old with 18 years old mother, Saddie Harris. He died in 1937 of Pneumonia after being exposed to mustard gas while serving in World War I years earlier. Thanks for your contribution Mr. Holiday, you are appreciated. Tribute Mondays: Marlowe Morris

Marlowe Morris (May 16, 1915 – May 28, 1978)

Jazz Pianist and Organist, Marlowe Morris, played with Coleman Hawkins, Al Sears, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Tiny Grimes and many others and also led a trio in the 1960's. He was much revered for his appearance in the 1944 short film, Jammin' The Blues. He died in 1978; thanks for your contribution Mr. Morris, you are appreciated. Smooth Jazz Saxophonist and Flautist, Najee, began playing the Clarinet at aged 8 years old, but later moved on to the Saxophone. In his teen years he toured the world and worked with others during the 1970's, and continued on into the 1980's and 1990's with well received solo efforts. World Saxophone Quartet

Jazz Ensemble, the World Saxophone Quartet, began in 1977 and is revered for their blending of Free Jazz, R&B, Funk and South African Jazz into one full sound. Walter Roland Dickerson (April 16, 1928 – May 15, 2008)

Jazz Vibraphone Player, Walt Dickerson, was a part of the Post-Bop movement. He graduated from the Morgan State University in 1953 and led his own Band, after a tenure in the US Army. Bennie Ross "Hank" Crawford, Jr. (Dec. 21, 1934 – Jan. 29, 2009)

R&B, Hard Bop, Jazz Funk, Soul Jazz Alto Saxophonist, Arranger and Songwriter, Hank Crawford, had a solo career that included much loved Albums. He studied music theory and composition at Tennessee State University in the 1950's and went on to lead his own Quartet before working as a Musical Director for Ray Charles from 1959 to 1963. He continued on working with Etta James, Lou Rawls and others and also continued solo work. He died in 2009; thanks for your contribution Mr. Crawford you are appreciated. Jazz outfit , Arthur Gibbs and his Gang, was active in the 1920`s and recorded and released many favourites of the roaring Twenties. The Band was led by Songwriter, Composer, Conductor and Pianist, Arthur Harrington Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs died in 1956. Tribute Mondays: Bob Fuller

Bob Fuller (December 31, 1898 – unknown)

Blues and Jazz Saxophonist (Tenor, Soprano and Alto) and Clarinetist, Bob Fuller, mostly accompanied female Singers during the 1920's. He worked as a studio Saxophonist for both Ajaz and Victor Records and also as a Sideman. He released his own efforts with his Trio, but later left the industry to work in prisons for the New York City Police Department during the 1930's. Russell Jacquet

Russell Jacquet (December 4, 1917 - February 28, 1990)

Trumpeter, Russell Jacquet, was the elder brother of Tenor Saxophonist, Illinois Jacquet, whom he worked with for many years. He led his own Band, which was the House Band at the Cotton Club from 1945 to 1949. His remaining career included memberships in Groups and Sideman work.
