Tribute Mondays: Hampton Hawes

Hampton Barnett Hawes, Jr. (November 13, 1928 – May 22, 1977)

Jazz Pianist, Hampton Hawes, was self taught at an early age and began his professional run in his late teens. He had an up and down career that included a stint in prison (he was pardoned by President Kennedy during a 10 year sentence) an an heroin addiction. He released a successful award winning book (his autobiography, Raise up off me, in 1974). He died of a brain hemorrhage in 1977 at aged 48 years old.
