Jazz Greats: Freddie Jenkins

Freddie Jenkins (October 10, 1906 – 1978)

Jazz Trumpeter, Freddie Jenkins, began playing in Bands at a young age and was a member in both Horace Henderson and Duke Ellington's Ensembles during the 1920's. He quit Duke Ellington's Band in 1935 because of lung problems and founded his own Band after recovering, but retired when his lung problems returned. He then worked behind the scenes as a Songwriter, a Disc Jockey and in Music Press. He was also a Deputy Sheriff in Fort Worth. He died in 1978; please take a listen here and have a great Saturday: It don't mean a thing (if I ain't got that swing) [Duke Ellington's Orchestra], In a sentimental mood (1935) [Duke Ellington's Orchestra] and Toledo Shuffle (with Bernard Addison, Alber Nicholas, A. Rollini, J. Turner, J. Watts)
